Also, the more people live in cities, the lower the birthrate. It has always been so.
He's an idiot - but then he's a religious leader. (Also, of course, though I have not seen any supporting figures, my impression is that there are, proportionally, more secular Jews than secular Christians, particularly in the US and UK - and always remembering that Israel has one of the highest proportions of atheists and agnostics in the world - so he is probably scared for his own power.)
