OOOh! So that's why we haven't seen Danny around very much. I love how this neatly summarizes everything that's going on with them. I kind of expected this to angle towards pre-slash "She's gone, now's my chance" kind of thing. This is much better. Steve is genuinely upset that he's been that out of touch.
