The only reason I can come up with is if the boys were "doing it" before Dean left, and John found out. That would certainly explain this whole mess. However, if that is the case, I'd apreciate a warning somewhere, as weecest squicks me something bad, and I really don't want to think about a Sam who's not even fourteen doing anything with anyone, let alone his brother.
Okay, complaints are over. I really liked the style of this, and Sam's journey was interesting and painful to follow, so wery different from canon. The part about the stunted growth was particularly painful to me, because he's Sam, and he's supposed to be big dammit ( ... )

anyways, i wanted to write a story where sam stayed, john left, and the only real reason why, what would make sense to me is something with loyalty. something that john did. i don't know exactly what and that's probably why it's so vague.
john, for me, would probably teeter more on the edge with sam. sam seems to encompass mary's passion and vitality more-- at least, that's the way i see it. and so the memory kinda gets to him.
anyways. thank you so much for the comments and reading. and *laughs* apologies again for subjecting you to non-caffeinated ramblings.

Personally I really need a more concrete reason before I can buy such a complete turnaround in character that is Dean abandoning his family, but that's just my opinion and obviously YMMV and all that.

Well, considering the very limited canon available on Mary Winchester I can't say I really agree or disagree with that - it's probably more up to personal interpretation than anything else. Your scenario is however very plausible, especially in this setting. Thanks for clarifying that. :)
Thanks again for being so polite and for writing such a fascinating story. I don't think I've had a story so stuck in my mind after reading it for quite some time.

First of all, the fact that this amazing piece is for me? I'm speechless.
“Want my number?” Dean’s question is evasive, but honest and there’s a tentative understanding here, between them. An unnecessary offer follows as well, but Sam does his best to ignore it.
He can’t stay.
“Later,” he lies, closing his eyes. He shifts to his side. “Later. We’ll talk about it then.”
Dean breathes.
that killed me so much. it just...scraped so deep i felt it in my BONES.
And then:
He forgot a goodbye
Jesus, just...Jesus.
I feel like my insides are bleeding with the hurt and rawness of it all.
