And, my God, my MOTHER has started using the "r u there?" shorthand in her IMs. I went into Capslocky Ranty Doom mode at her over it, and told her that guys who used that style talking to me on dating sites got crossed RIGHT off my list.
I admit, the first language in this house has become LOLcat more than English, and we had a discussion last night about how adding "-tacular," "-tastic," or "-riffic" to just about any word improved things (caused by someone on a comment thread talking about "rocktacular" peaches and tomatoes), but that "-licious" was anathema.
I think what it boils down to is that I approve of creativity and whimsy when it comes to language, but I like it to come from a base of knowing and being able to use the most formal rules, so that the departures are intentional and effective, not just sloppy.

and i thought my uncle was bad. he's started texting and sending media messages back and forth with his friends, he's about 43 mind you, and he was talking about how he got this 'text message' from his friend and proceeded to show me a video. i think it's funny that a lot of older people think the pictures and motion pictures are also included in the words 'text messages' even though they seem to be more than just text.
my brother takes pleasure in modifying words and doing the first letter swap to make two new words. after living with him for years, it gets kinda old when he runs into the room to exclaim that when you reverse the letters in 'bookcase' you get 'cook base.. you know? like a military zone for the kitchen staff.'
