Random Ranting: Magazine Subscriptions

So I have a secret addiction to manga.  Well, I guess it isn't so much a secret as it is blatently obvious - step into my bedroom and there are piles of comic books all over the place.  But unlike books, which I read and talk about and go out of my way to promote, I don't really talk about the manga I read.  There's no particular reason for this. It's really sad that Shojo Beat went under. I wasn't subscribed, but my library had all of the issues and it was my favorite manga magazine.

If you want to try out another manga magazine, I'd recommend Yen Plus. They just started a new series last month, Black Butler, so you wouldn't be too behind on it. On their website they have links to places where you can buy individual back issues, so you could try out one issue before subscribing.

I've never heard of Yen Plus before, I'll definitely check them out! Thanks!

It's a real pity about Shojo Beat, but from what I've read subscriptions was a huge problem. While many people in the anime/manga community praised the magazine, not enough of them were willing to commit, and the low subscriber rate probably made it hard to get the high advertising revenue that keeps magazines running.

over in the egl community and related comms, we've been keeping an eye on shojobeat and tokyopop *who makes the english gothic and lolita bibles*, and both companies are having severe money troubles.

Most comic books in general are having to up their prices from 2.99 to 3.99, and with manga already being at $10+, and with more and more manga being able to download for free online, I can see why such magazines are going under right now, as well as release dates for manga issues being farther and farther apart.

send another email, and tell them you'll report them to the Better Business Bureau if they don't respond. That usually gets non-responsive companies to behave
