I love this play (to read!) so much. The last time I saw it, Beatrice was definitely shrewish, but I agree with you - I think she should be more playful and less Kate. This isn't Taming of the Shrew!

It's a shame about the production's Beatrice. She and Benedick are so pivotal to this working - their more mature love, coming from a background of disappointment and hurt, is such a contrast to the flighty, impassioned, impulsive love of Hero and Claudio. If you haven't already seen it, Kenneth Branagh's version, with Emma Thompson as Beatrice, hits all the right notes. It's my cheer-myself-up movie, because anything using that much linen and fake tan is always going to be funny.

I have to agree with narrelle that Kenneth Branagh's version is great! It's actually what got me into Shakespeare when I was about 11 or so. So much fun. I always felt that Beatrice is nasty to Benedick because of their implied history of betrayal/hurt, but that she's generally more playful to everyone else. Hope you get a chance to see it!
