I agree with you last paragraph. The writing style was completely detached and I really never developed a particular affinity for any of the three women (which is not a plus for this type of book). It wasn't so bad that I think I would have put it down and stopped reading it, but I wouldn't go so far to say I enjoyed it either. I have read many Asian American novels and memoirs (particularly Chinese and Korean), and I was just expecting a lot more.
