I really didn't care for The Left Hand of Darkness, but maybe this is better. Nice review.

Non-stock fantasy classic, hearthily recommended.

Love the Earthsea books. My personal favourite is the third book, The Tombs of Atuan, but they're all excellent.

Other fantasy authors I would recommend are Robin Hobb (all, but start with the Farseer trilogy), Garth Nix (The Abhorsen trilogy) and Trudi Canavan's Black Magician series. No superior elves or grungy dwarves *g* in any of those, just page turning stories and excellent writing.

Oh, you'll find out more on the dragons if you keep going with the series! I loved those books when I was younger, I still recommend them to people.

Other fantasy you may want to try? The Prydain chronicles, because it bugs me how people will say, O! I've read Chronicles of Narnia or Dark Is Rising, but something as basic as The Black Cauldron gets overlooked. I'd also recommend anything by Margret Weis and Tracy Hickman, but they may fall into 'wordy' for you, I dunno. They're less wordy than Tolkien or Michael Moorcock, let's put it that way.

It's weird, because I often like - usually prefer - wordy novels. It's just Tolkien that drives me batty.

I've read the first 4 books of this series and really enjoyed them! I'm planning on reading the last two at some point...
