This is the first time that I’ve ever read a Norman Mailer novel. In fact, my only other experience with him has been a brief mention of his name in a Savage Garden song:

I did not like this one either. It was my first exposure to Norman Mailer and kind of turned me off... I know he's supposed to be really good, but I haven't been able to bring myself to read another of his books.

The one other book of his that intrigues me is "Ancient Evenings" because it's set in Ancient Egypt. Egyptian gods tend to be on the raunchy side in their mythology, so perhaps his style will be better suited to them?
