I read this for a class when I was 14 and in boarding school, and I hated it. In fact, we all did. We thought Catherine was stupid and we were so irritated by Austen's obsession with propriety and social norms.

Over the years I've read a few more Austen books and actually enjoyed them, so I decided to give this one another shot and just reread it a few weeks ago. And I loved it! When I was younger, I was just unable to grasp the fact that Austen was being sarcastic when she was talking about all the virtues of being a young lady. Now that I'm able to see that snarky humor, I love it.

Ah, I'll have to read this one soon! I think I own it already - I buy a lot of books at a big local semi-annual book sale we have here, and then forget which ones I own later. I love P&P, but was kind of bored with S&S when I read it, so I've been procrastinating on starting a new Austen novel. I do love Jane Eyre though, so it's nice to have that comparison. Thanks for the review! :)

I'm not too fond of S&S, either. I also didn't care for Emma at all. I still haven't read Persuasion or Mansfield Park, though...I'm not sure if I have copies of them or not. Like you, I acquire books in big batches and forget what I already have :-p
