Something Wickedly Weird: The Icy Hand (#2 in the Something Wickedly Weird series)
by Chris Mould

Disclaimer: I have not read the first book in this series as the publisher had run out of review copies.  The Icy Hand refers back to the first book, Something Wickedly Weird: The Wooden Mile and the events of the previous volume often enough that I don't think the books are stand alone, or can be read out of order.   Since I feel I am reading the book handicapped, and cannot give a fair experience, I am not doing a full review.  Thanks to Roaring Brook Press for kindly sending this book to me, and I am sorry that I am unable to review it, but I don't feel I can do the book justice.

Stanley Buggles inherited Candlestick Hall from his great-uncle last summer, and had some truly strange adventures (covered in SWW #1: The Wooden Mile) but he's hoping that things will be normal during his winter visit.  However, within a few days of his arrival it is clear that the weirdness continues, for the headless ghost of Admiral Swift wants Stanley to find its head and ominous warriors are hurrying in his direction.  Apparently, in the previous volume Stanley picked up something called the 'Ibis'  but from the text of The Icy Hand I'm not sure what it is.  I assume that if someone is reading these books in the proper order it makes more sense.

Chris Mould illustrates his books with very cool black and white sketches.  They're creepy without being scary, and suit the book quite well.  It's strange and odd - quirky is a good word for it - without running the danger of frightening kids.
