GEM is actually one of my favourite episodes, despite how much whumpage Crais takes (maybe because of all the whumpage, lol).
The "Talyn, you've seen them both naked" scene makes me grin like an idiot every time. Unfortunately it didn't make either Crichton or Crais grow up overly much. Or Talyn for that matter. Maybe Aeryn should have smacked all three of them.
One thing that annoys me is the whole bleedback thing. Not only because of the ratings concern meant that it didn't actually look that bad, but because it's introduced... aaaaaaaaaaaand never ever mentioned again. Personally I think they should have pushed the envelope on that part, and had it have real repercussions - what is more scary than a sentient, armed vessel going all HAL on his captain and crew?
Then again, I'm not going to complain too loudly when I get to ogle a semi-naked Crais and that fabulous bed *shallow*
I do like this episode. It's yet another great example of FS taking a rather cliched old SF plot and using it as a framework upon which to build a solid, character-based story. I have to give credit to Browder, too, as he doesn't use his turn at writing to create a story that's all about Crichton -- or even one that makes Crichton look particularly great, considering that he's wrong about almost everything that's going on with Crais and Aeryn for most of the episode -- but rather showcases all of the characters well. I'm including Stark and Rygel in that, as I think they're hilarious here. Plus, it's nice to see Stark saving the day! I'm also including Talyn, of course. One of the really impressive things about this show is the way in which even Moya and Talyn, who have no faces or voices for the audience to identify with, still feel like real people with emotions, motivations, relationships... It's all to easy too understand Talyn's childish desire to have Daddy Crais and Mommy Aeryn and no pesky, ill-tempered human interloper
