While he was in the navy, Dad met a beautiful girl serving ice cream at a soda fountain, one thing lead to another, and after his tour was up, they got married
Holy cats, seriously? That is just so awesome I cannot articulate it.
A guy who loves Miss Piggy and cherry tomatoes is a guy after my own heart.
I've said it a lot over the past week, but damn, I am sorry I never met him, because he sounds like a great guy.
Actually, you did meet him once. He was at our wedding. He and my mom were the people you didn't already know; remember the older couple with the confused looks on their faces as if wondering "What the hell is going on here and why is there a guy dressed as the Pope performing the ceremony? Is this legitimate?"
XD In my case, the name Ralph always makes me think of the title character from the 'Greatest American Hero' TV show. XD
And anyone who liked the Muppet Show is certainly cool in my book!
So your dad liked to build things? My sister would have loved him, at least when she was a teenager. Sometimes, I think if our rinky-dink high school had had the right classes, she'd have ended up an architect instead of a graphic artist. ^_^ And I still have [and use!] the cricket stool she made in the shop class she was finally able to take [I did offer to give it back to her, since I'm not sure how I ended up with it in the *first* place, but she said I was welcome to keep it]. I tend to love handmade things anyway [the hand-made quilt-frame my mother-in-law has is GORGEOUS], so even just sitting back and watching your dad Build All The Things would have been fun for me. ^_^
When I was a kid, one year for Christmas, I wanted an art kit that was in the Sears (or Penny's, whatever) catalog. I now realize that the reason I didn't get a lot of the things I wanted for Christmas was because my parents just didn't have the money. I think the art kit was one of those. Instead of the one in the catalog, my dad made a giant clip board, and bought a t-square, a triangle, a giant drawing pad and a couple of "How to Draw" books. I still use that giant clip board for a drawing board, and still have the t-square.
I also still use an art table that my high school art teacher gave to me and Dad improved by stabilizing the legs and replacing the top with a larger top. This of course made it heavier, but doubled the work area (so how come it's always covered in crap and I end up working in one small corner of it?).
Oh, yeah, ( I forgot to mention) I have often wondered where my dad might have ended up if my grandpa hadn't pulled him out of school. But then, he probably wouldn't have married my mom ('cause I gather that Dad joined the navy to get away from the farm/grandpa) and I wouldn't be here to wonder about it......
I have, indeed, seen that clipboard, and that art table! I didn't know that about them. That makes it extra nice. *wags*
I assume your art table is covered with crap and has only a small working space for the same reason mine, which is literally A DOOR, has the exact same problem. I still don't know WHAT THAT REASON IS. Out of 24 square feet, give or take, I use about 2.5. The rest? Covered in crap. Ludicrous, given the amount of legitimate storage space I have shoehorned into that room.
He sounds lovely--these are wonderful stories. *Oddly, he also sounds very much like my grandfather, whose name was also Ralph. Though he tended to fix things . . . interestingly.)
Yeah, a lot of the things my dad repaired ended up with that look that said", Not All Original Parts". A lot of times though, I have to admit, they worked better.
