Clutter

A book followed me home from the library: Clean Your Clutter, Clear Your Life: a practical manual using Feng Shui principles. Not a terribly well-written book. I didn't even read it thoroughly; I mostly skimmed through it. However--it reminded me of something that I really needed to be reminded of at this moment in my life. Somehow I just can't seem to get everything decluttered. Even though I'm only working part-time I never seem to make any real progress. Maybe it's just that there's too much stuff here to really clean thoroughly. I feel that energy drain as well. I just keep getting stuck at trying to figure out what to do with all this stuff. When I first started working part time I thought for sure It'd only take a week and I'd be all caught up...

Here's a trick I learned from another book about decluttering--can't remember which one now. It's called Minimum Maintenance, or MM. When you're too busy to really clean, do the minimum so you won't fall behind. Do the necessary daily things like washing dishes. Then spend 5 minutes per room straightening up and putting wandering things away. I actually set a timer (I use my cell phone clock). It works wonders.

As for having too much stuff sitting around--what I finally did was buy some boxes from U-Haul and start putting things away. I'm sure you're not actually actively using all the stuff that's sitting out. Box it up. If you inventory it so you can find stuff if you do suddenly need it, that will help you to mentally let go of it. Then put the boxes out of the way somewere, like in the basement storage room.
