Boycotting the meat industry.

I'm going vegetarian. I've turned a blind eye long enough to the incredible creulties in the meat industry, and I've decided not to support it anymore. Over the course of the past week (little more than a week, actually) I've drastically cut down my meat intake - by about 90% if I had to hazard a guess. Will I miss meat? No, I don't think so. I recommend looking into East Indian recipes. Very flavorful, you get your protein from the legumes and rice, and it will fill you up. :)

Channa Masala is awsome, so is Palak Paneer, Muttar/Mattar Paneer, and Kubuli (something like that anyway) Dhal. I will get recipes to you when I can find the ones I use. :)

Thanks. ^^ I've never tried coucous! Is it good? How do you prepare it?

The kind I get comes in a box. ^^; Near East is the brand name and I get it at Whole Foods. You mix water, olive oil, and the seasoning package, then add the couscous pasta when it's boiling, then take it off the heat and let it sit for five minutes, then fluff with a fork and serve. I LOVE the tomato and lentil variety. It's absolutely delicious. :)

The above comment is what I used to do. Then I got brave and bought a package of organic couscous without any fixings. Just the real stuff. What's really good about it is that you can add your own spices, and you know you won't be getting any extra chemicals in them like you would in anything packaged ( ... )

I was vegetarian for about a year and a half- I just went back to eating meat this spring.

It's a lot easier than people think for a vegetarian to get all the essentials in their meals (protein, etc). A lot of people do tofu- I found I didn't really like it. But tempeh is delicious. Any kind of nut is good, though almonds are best because they arn't as high in calories as some other nuts. Also cheese.

I don't know much about grains. There is a quick little grain guide here: http://www.foodfit.com/healthy/healthyGrains.asp
Barley is my favorite...its good in soup with mushrooms.

Oh and to illucian's comment: couscous is the beeeesstttt.

Oh that reminds me (sorry if I'm rambling)- be careful not to overdo carbohydrates. I found that when I was veggie, I would do a LOT of pasta, and a lot of bagels/sandwiches/etc to replace the meat. But too much of that can make you feel sluggish and such.

Yea...I think thats it. O___o

I actually don't miss the meat. :3 Sure, I liked the flavor. But honestly, I like the flavor and texture of veggies and stuff more, so it doesn't matter. I may try some mock-meat though for 'quick fix' stuff. However, it might be nice to get, as you point out, some mock sausage and stuff so I can still have a nummy breakfast with my fiance. ;D
Thanks for the info, and moreso for the support!
