Cupid - Part 6
“The fish is pretty, isn’t it?” said Ohno, focusing on the fish that swam around them in the aquarium.
Nino didn’t answer. Not that Ohno would realize if he answered or not. He was too preoccupied with the swimming creatures. While Ohno’s attention was on the fish, Nino’s attention was elsewhere. Rather than looking at the fish, he was more interested to look at Ohno’s expression. There were sparkles in Ohno’s eyes as he stared at those fish and Nino was fascinated by the sight.
"I am jealous," Nino suddenly said, deciding to tease his date. "You look at the fish more than me. Are you here to date me or the fish?"
Ohno immediately turned to look at him and Nino quickly pouted, pretended to be sulking. He wondered what the businessman would do.
“Little Cupid…”
“Aren’t they cute?” A few girls behind them started to giggle, interrupting Ohno from consoling Nino.
Both Nino and Ohno turned to look at the group of teenage girls behind them. There were four of them and they appeared to be around 15 years old. All of them had the same dreamy expression on their face as they stared at Nino and Ohno. Nino tilted his head. Were these girls talking about them?
“I want someone to look at me like that too!” One of the girls said and the others murmured in agreement. Their eyes were still fixed on Nino and Ohno.
“Err… Hi!” Nino greeted them. This was awkward. What did these girls want?
“Hi!” All four of them chorused. Then, the one in the middle asked. “Are you two a couple?”
“Huh?” Nino asked. He was befuddled because of the girls.
“Of course!” Another one said. Then, all four of them started talking simultaneously, making Nino dizzy.
“Wait!” Nino raised his voice and the four of them stopped talking almost immediately. They tilted their heads, waiting for Nino to continue. “Hmm…”
But, Nino trailed off. Now that he had their attention, he didn’t know what to say. Luckily, he wasn't alone. Ohno cleared his throat and the girls squealed excitedly. Hmm… maybe they had a crush on Ohno, Nino assumed. That's why they were like this.
"He's cute!" The first one said. "No wonder his boyfriend…" She pointed at Nino. "... looked at him like that!"
"Like what?" Nino asked confusedly. Why did these weird girls surround him and Ohno? Maybe they were attracted by Ohno's weird vibe.
"Like someone in love," the girls said in unison. "Please tell us you're dating. If you're not... Mr Chubby Face, please accept Mr Big Head as your boyfriend. He likes you a lot. All of us watched the way he stared at you. He is totally in love with you,"
Oh my… this was so embarrassing! How did these girls know he had feelings for Ohno when he hadn’t figured it out yet? And what did they mean by someone in love? Nino merely stared at Ohno with fascination because of the way Ohno looked at those fishes. Not because he was in love with Ohno!
Nino couldn't bring himself to face Ohno. He is too mortified. As far as he was concerned, the businessman was the one in love with him, not the other way around. But, now, people claim that he's in love with Ohno because of the way he stared at the businessman. Isn't that weird?
"Don't worry," Ohno muttered, silencing the girls. "I am on a date with him because I like him a lot,"
The girls were about to say something else but Ohno cut them off.
"If you don't mind, we want to see the sharks next. So, please excuse us,"
Ohno then bowed politely at the girls and then pulled Nino away from them.
"Are you okay, Little Cupid?" Ohno asked. He had brought Nino to a cafe for a cup of coffee after they escaped from the girls. "You have been quiet. Did I do anything to upset you?"
Nino shook his head. After the embarrassing moment with the girls, he kept on thinking whether Ohno was affected by what those girls said. Did Ohno believe them? Did he believe that Nino was staring at him with a look full of love? Damn those girls! How dare they give Ohno hope!
Ohno smiled softly and then reached out to touch his hand. Nino didn’t push it away. "I apologized for what happened earlier,"
Eh? Why did Ohno apologize? He had done nothing wrong.
"If it offers you any comfort, I don't believe them. I will only believe it when I hear it from you,"
“Ohchan…” Nino didn’t know how to respond to that. Ohno is a good person and Nino didn’t want to hurt him. Before this, one date with Ohno was what he wanted to do. But, after getting to know more about the businessman, Nino had to admit that he enjoyed being around Ohno. A small part of him wanted to accept Ohno as his boyfriend but…
“I’m afraid,” Nino mumbled the words as he looked at their intertwined fingers on the table. Nino didn’t like it when other people touched him. Weirdly, he was okay to hold hands with Ohno.
“What are you afraid of?” Ohno asked softly, causing Nino to look away from the hands and gave his attention back to the businessman sitting in front of him.
“I’m not sure,” Answered Nino. “I don’t know what to do about us. I mean… well… I like you… but… I'm afraid you will leave me if…"
Nino lowered his head. He wasn't sure of what to say. Should he tell Ohno about what happened between him and Masaki? Should he tell Ohno about his fear?
"Little Cupid…" Ohno stroked his hand softly and Nino lifted his face to look at the businessman. "If you're not ready yet, you don't have to force yourself. We can take it slow. I will wait for you to be ready,"
Nino took a deep breath. Ohno had been nice and understanding to him. He's willing to wait for him to be ready. That's why Nino had to tell Ohno about Masaki. It's the least he could do.
"Who do you think Masaki is to me?"
"Hmm…" Ohno looked away and Nino could see the sadness and worry in his eyes upon hearing the name. "You love him, I think,"
"Loved," Nino corrected Ohno. His relationship with Masaki was in the past. "Or at least, I don't think I still love him. It hurts when he isn't jealous to see us together. Well, he dumped me. So, it is easier for him to move on. But, still…"
"I don't understand," Ohno frowned. Nino tried to avoid smiling as he looked at Ohno's confused face. The look on his face as he tried to fathom what Nino was saying… The wrinkle… The way his lips puckered… all of it made Ohno look cute and adorable. "You don't love him anymore but you're sad because he's not jealous. What do you mean by that? Are you perhaps in denial to admit that you still love him?”
Nino shook his head. Was he in denial? Nah, he didn’t think so. This morning, he was still confused because of what happened. But, now, he started to understand what he felt for his ex-boyfriend. Indeed, he hadn’t moved on from Masaki. But, it wasn’t because he was still in love with Masaki. Instead, he was afraid to be hurt again by the person he loved. That’s why he refused to be in a relationship.
“Hmmm… How could I explain this?” Nino tapped his chin, thinking of the right words to be used to explain his feelings. “Well… this could be a rather childish reason. But, when Masaki showed up this morning, I sort of wish that he wants to get back together with me. And, because he broke my heart years ago, I want to do the same thing to him by showing him I have moved on,”
“That’s why you kissed me?” Ohno asked. Nino frowned. That part was still a mystery to him. He could just introduce Ohno as his boyfriend to Masaki. But, why did he kiss the businessman?
“Maybe... I’m not sure,” answered Nino. “But, when I see how happy he is for me, I am upset because I cannot get my revenge. I’m so immature, right?
"You are not immature, Little Cupid,"
Nino loved the way Ohno called him. His voice was so soft and it melted his heart each time he heard it.
"You keep calling me Little Cupid. Do you still remember my real name?"
"Of course!" Ohno quickly said. "Ninomiya Kazunari. That's your name. It's a cute name and I love it. But, I want to be different and call you with a nickname,"
Nino responded with a smile. He always felt shy whenever Ohno complimented him.
"May I ask you something, Little Cupid?" Ohno asked suddenly. "It's rather personal so I understand if you don't want to answer it,"
"What is it?"
"Why do you break up with Masaki?"
"Well…" Admittedly, Nino didn’t want to talk about his relationship with Masaki after their break up. Jun had tried a few times to talk to him about it, saying it would help him to move forward. However, Nino always shot him down because he wasn’t ready.
“Maybe I shouldn’t...”
“No, I am perfectly fine with it,” Nino quickly cut Ohno off. Wasn't it weird that he couldn't talk about this with Jun but he was ready to do it with Ohno?
"Masaki and I…" Nino began. "We were childhood friends. And after high school, we started dating. Like other couples, we also fought sometimes. But, it's nothing big,"
"During our university year, Masaki started volunteering for the charity. We spent less time together because of it but I didn't mind. Masaki is a kind person. He likes to do those things so I tried to be supportive,"
"Then, there was an offer for volunteering abroad and he accepted it without consulting me. I… well… I was angry at him for doing so. I know it was selfish of me but…”
Nino sighed. Ohno must be thinking that it was childish of him to be angry at Masaki because of that. But, was it wrong for him to feel that way? He could still tolerate Masaki and his volunteer work in Japan because they could still see each other. Sometimes, Nino even joined the charity work. But, if Masaki left Japan, it would be hard for them to meet.
“I don’t think you’re selfish, Little Cupid,”
“But I am. When he told me about it, I didn't tell him how I really feel… that I didn't want him to go. I went along with his wish to end the relationship even though it wasn't what I wanted. Masaki thinks we broke up on good terms but I actually resent him for choosing volunteer works over me. He contacted me by email but I always ignored them. Isn't it selfish of me to act like that?”
“No, you are not selfish,” Ohno convinced him by squeezing his hand tighter. “You know the work is important for Masaki and you don’t want to make him choose. That’s why you let him go without telling him your feeling. For me, you are mature to prioritize his happiness over yours,”
“But, I ignore him,” said Nino. “If I am mature, I shouldn’t do that to him. And when he showed up this morning, you know what I want to do, right?”
“You’re not immature for doing something like that, my Little Cupid,” Ohno countered. "It's your way of coping with the breakup and I'm sure Masaki knows why you ignore those emails. Perhaps he felt guilty for it. And he must be worried about you. That's why he visited you when he came back to Japan. And don't you see it? He is genuinely happy to see you… err… with a boyfriend now,"
Ohno's cheek reddened as he said the last part and Nino found it cute to see how bashful the businessman was. This was a perfect moment to tease Ohno. But, as Nino felt guilty for the mess he created this morning, he should apologize instead of teasing Ohno.
"Ohchan, I want to apologize about this morning. I shouldn't kiss you or declare you as my boyfriend. It's not my intention to give you hope by acting like that. It's…hmm…"
"A spur-of-the-moment decision?" Ohno suggested when Nino couldn't find the right word to describe his action. Nino answered with a nod. "It's okay, Little Cupid. I understand. We are still trying to know each other. I enjoyed the kiss, by the way. I never thought that my first kiss would be like that but…"
"Your first kiss?" Nino asked for confirmation. Seriously? Was he Ohno's first kiss? That can't be true. Ohno was so skillful in kissing. There's no way it's his first kiss.
But, seeing the way Ohno smiled shyly at him confirmed that Nino was indeed his first kiss.
"I'm sorry for stealing your first kiss. I'm sure you want it to be special,"
"It's okay. The kiss is better than I imagine because it's with you. I'm sorry for being a sloppy kisser,"
"Are you kidding me? It was the best kiss I ever had,"
Oops! He shouldn't say that.
Ah, this was so embarrassing! Things were awkward as the two of them smiled shyly at each other. Nino was thinking about the kiss and he wondered if Ohno thought of the same thing.
"Should we continue exploring the aquarium? Ohno asked, breaking the awkward silence.
"Ah, you want to see the sharks. Do they have sharks here?" Nino asked.
"I don't think so. I said it to escape from…" Ohno trailed off as something seemed to catch his attention. Nino wondered why he reacted like that. So he turned around and saw...
