Will you marry me - The Reason

“What did you say?”

Nino was certain he didn’t mishear his roommate. But, it didn’t make any sense. Why would Ohno propose to him? They were not lovers. Yeah, he did mention that Ohno loved him. But, it wasn’t that kind of love. The two of them just love each other as friends.

Right?

“Is this a practice proposal?”

That would be the only reasonable explanation, right? The only problem was Ohno didn’t have a girlfriend. So, who did he do the practice for?

“Huh? What practice?”

“A practice proposal,” repeated Nino. “Do you want to propose to someone else? But, you practice it with me first,”

Ohno frowned but then shook his head.

“No, I am proposing to you,” said Ohno. “I want to marry you,”

“Why?”

“Because I want to have a baby with you,”

“Huh?” The answer didn’t explain anything. And Nino was at a loss of what to say. He couldn’t get pregnant. Didn’t Ohno realize it?

Perhaps because he noticed how confused Nino was because of the whole situation, Ohno took a deep breath and urged Nino to do the same. He did so and it helped to calm him down with Ohno rubbing his back.

“Explain it to me,” said Nino. “Properly. From the beginning,”

Ohno scratched his head, taking his time to start talking again. When he was ready, he took a seat on the nearest chair to Nino. He held Nino’s hands tightly. They had been holding hands all the time but maybe because of the proposal, Nino felt weird right now. Still, he let Ohno hold his hands despite how he felt.

“I’ve been thinking about my life recently,” Ohno began. Nino stayed silent. He didn’t want to interrupt the man. Ohno wasn’t the type to talk about his feelings. “When I look at the family around me… I think I’m missing something. I don’t know what it is. Not until I played with my niece when I visited my family last week,”

Ohno had a sister and she had a three-year-old daughter.

“Then, I realized. I want one of my own. My own child,”

Nino fought the urge to interrupt, wanting to point out the obvious. Even if Ohno married him, he couldn’t give Ohno a child. He didn’t say anything, though. He let the man continue.

“But, to have a child, I have to be with a woman. I have to be in love with that person. I have to live with her. And, you know how I feel about living with someone else,”

Nino nodded. Before Nino, Ohno had other roommates. But, he wasn’t comfortable with them. He didn’t explain it to Nino. All Nino knew Ohno had a hard time communicating with his previous roommates. Nino was the only person he was comfortable living with.

“So, I thought of adopting a baby,” Ohno continued. “He or she might not be mine but if I take care of him or her from the beginning, I will still have an experience of being a father, right?”

Once again, Nino could only nod.

“But, the social worker at the agency I visited told me that it would be hard for me to adopt a baby. Financially, I am eligible. But the system favoured a married couple,”

“So, you asked me to marry you,” said Nino. Finally understood the reason for the proposal.

“It seems like a perfect solution,” answered Ohno. “I am comfortable around you. You are my roommate. I still need to ask for your permission to bring a baby into this house. So, what do you think? Would you like to raise a baby with me?”

Ohno looked at him expectantly and Nino knew the man wanted him to say yes. But, this was not an easy decision to make. Honestly, he hadn’t thought about having a family.

But, if anything, he agreed about being comfortable around Ohno. They had been living together for five years. He didn’t think he could survive without the other man.

Still, was he ready to raise a child? The thing about being married to Ohno was not a problem. According to their friends, they were already acting like a married couple. But, with a baby, things would be different. He didn’t think he could be a good father.

“You don’t have to give me an answer right away,” said Ohno. “But, at least think about it, please,”

Ohno was so understanding. That was what Nino loved the most about the man.

“I don’t mind marrying you,” said Nino. “We are already a married couple, Ohchan even though we are not legally married. But, raising a child… I don’t think I can do it,”

Ohno opened his mouth but closed it with a sigh. Maybe, he didn’t know what to say to convince Nino into thinking about it first.

“Can we just get married first?” Asked Nino. Ohno’s eyes widened upon hearing the unexpected question. “And the baby thing… give me six months to be ready for it?”

Ohno blinked his eyes a few times. “Is that a yes to my proposal?”

“Of course,” answered Nino. “You made all these preparations. It would be weird to say no to this kind of proposal. Anyway, is it necessary to propose to me like this? You could just tell me about having a baby and we can just discuss it,”

Ohno smiled sheepishly. “I know. But, this will be the only time I proposed to someone. So, I want to do it properly,”

“You’re weird,” said Nino. “But, this could be the only time someone proposed to me. So, I am okay with it. Now, put that ring on my finger. I cannot wait to tell our friends about it,”

Ohno nodded and then did as he was told.

A/N: I think Nino and Ohno might not be honest about why they want to marry each other.
Anyway, the idea for this fic came from watching season 12 of Two and a half men
