Call For Papers: 'Whoniversal' Appeal: An Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Conference on Doctor Who and All of its Spin-Offs.
'Whoniversal' Appeal: An Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Conference on Doctor Who and All of its Spin-Offs, will be held 14-15 November, 2008 at Cardiff University. Individual abstracts of 250 words or less are welcomed for papers or posters on topics relating to the various series of the so-called 'Whoniverse,' (i.e., both Classic and New Doctor Who, Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures, PROBE, and K-9 and Company). Papers should be no more than twenty minutes in length, and both current postgraduates and independent scholars with postgraduate degrees are eligible.
Any subjects are welcome, but we are looking especially for papers or posters on the following:
Internal to the Series:
Who's History?
An examination of the historical events shown, referenced, or used symbolically or allegorically in the serials.
Who's Society?
Looking at the various social trends and changes reflected over the course of the serials (e.g., feminism and women's liberation, gay rights, etc).
Who's Mythology/Religion?
Looking at the various mythico-religious and folklore elements in the serials.
External to the Series:
Societal:
The impact of the “Whoniverse”on British and/or global society.
History:
The history of the series in a greater context (e.g., as a reflection of societal changes).
Literary/Film Studies:
General analysis of the serials as works of literature and/or film.
Abstracts should be sent between 1 March and 31 May, 2008 to Melissa Beattie at Tritogeneia@aol.com, and pasted either into the body of the email or attached as a Word document, and the subject line 'Whoniverse conference submission.' Please indicate clearly if your submission is for a paper or poster, if you will require any audiovisual equipment, and the general subject of your submission (e.g., philosophy, physics, film studies, et cetera).
