His Dark Materials/Philip Pullman

Well, well, well, late as usual. I just discovered Philip Pullman and his trilogy, "His Dark Materials". I bought all 3 last Christmas. Here we are, March 2008, and I finally read them.
First book was written in 1995.

A promising start. A good story. Lots of imagination. Nothing negative I've found. Sorry, no details, hence no spoilers. No, it is not about a farm boy finding his destiny to become a hero. Good. It is about worlds. Many layers. Many stories.
First film came out in late 2007. I can't say that much about it, as I've only seen the trailers, but I do not think it did the 1st book justice. In my opinion, books are usually better than films anyway. The film comes out on DVD in April, I might get it and update. It might change my mind, but I doubt it. Too many computer graphics. Too much 'kid-friendly" material. The books are darker than the film. Good!
Meanwhile, I am digging into "The Subtle Knife" (book 2). Great storytelling. And basically, it never entered my mind that I was reading a kid's book, the plot is well-developed, and the suspense lingers. I like most of the characters, good or evil, they are all 3-dimensional. I like the switching back and forth between worlds.
