The Great Buffyverse Rewatch of 2015: What's My Line Part 1

Apr 14, 2015 23:39

As promised, we are going to take a catch-up week at the mid-point of the season; we will complete this two-parter, then take a week off. There is not necessarily any truth in the suggestion that your recappers need to hoard their strength before encountering Ted and Bad Eggs. Why would there be?

Still, onward to

This episode was my introduction to Buffy the Vampire Slayer so it holds a special place in my heart.

I loved the meeting between Willow/Oz and absolutely shipped them from the moment they sat next to each other on that sofa. I loved the relationship between Spike and Drusilla and the love that he shows for her.

I also have a soft spot for the skating scene, because like Buffy, I was obsessed with figure skating as a young girl. I was never good at it, but I did have a Nancy Kerrigan poster on my wall.

Finally, I like Kendra. It makes sense to me that her instinct would be to go after Angel and I appreciate how seriously she takes her job.

Have to offer an aside to Marti's comment on the extras. Back when I worked as an extra on the final season of Fame (the TV show), I was actually young enough to be a HS student, but many of my fellow extras were in their thirties or even forties. Hee! But honestly, a lot of it was about wanting pros who'd just do their job and not flaky, starstruck kids.

It's a great episode, although I do generally lump it together with its equally great second part. The misdirect with Kendra worked pretty well, I think. She's a sleek predator, so why not assume she's the tarot!leopard!Taraka assassin?

Angel’s apartment is full of things he’s collected throughout his long life. (How did he get them all to Sunnydale?)

This is actually something that I think is really interesting. I once got sucked into a conversation with some young fans who were complaining that other fans think of Spike as being "poor" and Angel as "rich". (They seemed to think that Angel's complaining about money on AtS was proof that he wasn't economically well off. Okaaaaay. People with means never complain about not having enough money. /sarcasm ( ... )

I love the episode, not least because it gave me this beautiful icon.

Every early episode featuring Dru and Spike has so many iconable moments.

I agree with rebcake though. It's hard to talk about this episode on its own, apart from part 2.

The relationship is clearly real and important to both of them, though she controls him effortlessly by bringing out the inner child in herself.

Very good point.

What's not to love about Oz and Willow - they are ADORABLE!
I love the subsidiary characters too - Dalton and Willy. I don't like the way Angel (and later, Buffy) keep beating Willy up.
A few quibbles - why is there a cage in a bar? Shouldn't Angel be able to break out of that cage quite easily? And if he couldn't, surely he could have rigged some more effective protection, by hanging his coat on the grille?
I love the idea of the Bug Man, but how does he kill you?
What do the Order of Taraka do with their bounty, if they have no desires? Give it to a charity that provides support for injured members?
How does Buffy know where Angel lives? (I can't remember ...)
Shouldn't Kendra's Watcher have taught her not to beat up innocent civilians?
Angel has clearly kept or sold the property of people he killed and invested the proceeds.
