That was wonderful, Gill. Your Insane in the Basement Spike-voice is spot on, and I love the brief Giles POV where he recognizes some of what Spike's ramblings are, and his musings on Byron and vamps.
I love gentle, caring Buffy, and trying-to-be-helpful Clem. I adore the style demons, explaining how Spike got his blue shirt and nicely trimmed and bleached hair back.
Wow, what a compelling story. Somehow I missed this one!
You write a very believable Crazy Spike. The rat bit really worked for me, at least in the sense of creeping me out. Eep! I like your Buffy too; she's trying so hard to be caring without quite knowing how. Very in character for her. And it's scientifically proven that Clem makes good stories even better!
