Beautifully done ficlet. What I've always liked about Angel and Darla's relationship is that they never denied that there was hate, jealousy, loyalty (of a sort) and betrayal mixed in with their love. Those conflicting feelings are carried out so well here from Angel's POV. This ficlet captures that there was an undeniable intensity and longevity in their relationship, but that like most things in life, it defied lables and was unabasedly complicated.
This line in particular stood to out to me: When he returned, even the dust had been swept away; now there is nothing at all to mark a demon's passing, save for that lingering warmth.
You also get extra points for using the word "motes." I fucking love that word.
I think the label-defying comes through when Darla and Angelus meet James and Elisabeth in Heartthrob - D&A practically mocking the other vamp couple, saying they'll never understand what D&A have - since James and Elisabeth are only "in love," nothing more.
Back in the day (pre-soul), it's as if they saw only each other as real. Here's another attempt at describing the Angelus/Darla thing, from something else I'm working on: Recognition and respect are reserved for the two of them; every other creature in the world is merely food or enemy, tool or toy.
And hey, I like "motes" too - and it ought to be a fairly common word in this fandom, what with all the vamp-dust flying around.
Nice. This - Four hundred years, and still she left no bones. Gone to dust, only dust, like any common fledgling is a lovely line. It sums up both the fleeting nature of existence, even for a vampire, and the levelling effect of death. And that last line is beautifully complex in it's emotional content.

the smooth yielding chill of her parted thighs.
for the souled never mourn an unsouled death - and all warmth is the Slayer now
It's already been mentioned how wonderfully this evokes their very complicated relationship. I'll chime in and agree because this is very awesome!

Poor Angel, always feeling the pull between the two of them whether either of them are actually there or not.
