Lovely story. It's a very illuminating, and believable, background for Amy. The two separate but interwoven stories worked very well.
And yes, One small thing, done for what seems an entirely justifiable reason, makes the next step, and the next, all that much easier. The slippery slope, and you've started her on it beautifully.

I love the background and the detail. The passing down of the gift through the generations of women. I like the characterization of Amy as part high-school kid, part scary-damaged person. Ominous.
