With the way their lifestyle is (never staying in the same place for long), it makes sense that Sam assumes that Dean dumped her. If Cassie hadn't pushed him away, would he have continued their relationship, with little chance of seeing her again?

Well, at the end of the episode, Dean seems reluctant to give up on the relationship despite Cassie saying she doesn't see much hope for it, so I think he would have clung on if he could. Letting go was never really in Dean's nature.
Yes, he did seem reluctant, and would've held on to it if he could. Realistically, he knew it couldn't be, but it felt good in the moment to be hopeful. Afterwards, when Sam asked him if it was worth putting things on hold, the way Dean looks at Sam... I interpreted it as yes, it was worth it, to be with Sam.
