As always, I love your analysis of the thing that makes this show so special--the relationship between the brothers.

The beginning of this series is very tense. The brothers are arguing. Immediately, quickly. And you don't even know who's right. Here you can understand both Sam and Dean. You can stand on the side of one, and on the side of the other. I rather side with Dean, because I understand that they are unlikely to find their father in Socramento, he most likely has already left there. They won't investigate the case and they won't find the father. Everything will be in vain. But Sam's logic is clear to me. But so is Dean. The father is alive, gives them tasks, asks them to investigate the case. Why rush to look for it? Especially if he himself does not want them to look for him. And they really look like "typical attitudes of the skeptic vs the religious acolyte." You worry about them and rush about, because it is difficult to understand which of them is right.
I've never noticed this gesture from Sam, or maybe I just didn't attach any importance to it.

I agree, it doesn't seem likely Sam would have found John. I'm inclined to think he was just grandstanding because he was frustrated and tired of taking John's orders. I think by the phonecall with Dean at the bus station he was already regretting leaving. And, yes, in the early seasons the show did a good job of communicating both brothers' point of view.

Toward the end of Swan Song, as Castiel is leaving the graveyard after Sam's sacrifice, we see him mirror this familiar gesture of Sam's. I suspect that was important. If I should ever get as far as reviewing season 5, I'll talk about what it suggested to me symbolically :)

I'm glad you enjoyed the review. I really appreciate your support of this series.

This brother break up scene is a fave! The acting choices from Jared and Jensen were spot on. As always the crew did an amazing job with the lighting and camera work to set the scene perfectly.
