LOL :D I think I recall Eric saying that Mary's maiden name was an homage to Joseph Campbell. He's certainly talked about the influence of "The Hero With a Thousand Faces" on Supernatural. If you're interested in the mythology behind SPN and, indeed, many popular hero stories (Star Wars, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings et al.) it's well worth a read. It'll revolutionize the way you see them all.

Just coincidence. I've been reading the Goddesses book for a while. I didn't know about the podcast, actually. Fortuitous timing! :)
