I'm rewatching more or less and I'm constantly stunned at how much the camera loved them in those days. Ah, it was all down to the WB and the pretty young things they pushed then, plus a truly atmospheric way of shooting and lighting scenes--down to Kim Manners? Anyhoo, gorgeous, and yeah, about when I started falling for Dean too., Poor Sammy. He took a while to snag me, but I still felt for him in these eps.

Anyhoo, I tend to view eps in terms of fanfic, and this one was a*goldmine!* There was so much backstory hinted at, and the kind of relationship that they had for seasons started to get laid down here, I think, what with Dean going behind Sam's back. I might be wrong, but Sam seems more open here than he does in subsequent years. But that might be me looking at it now through Sam-tinted glasses.

The deleted scene with Guenther is new to me. I wish they'd kept it in the ep, especially for Dean's reaction, with him having a hard time keeping up his cop persona. It felt a lot more personal.

The early seasons DVDs were a mine of extra scenes and interviews that were full of insights about the creators' intentions. The later DVDs dropped the deleted scenes, which I think was a pity :(

"Daughter Sari appears in her jammies and complains there’s something in her closet, and we recall that, in the pilot, Sam revealed he was afraid of the thing in his closet when he was nine". - I don’t see any parallels at all until I read it from someone))
"As for Sam, he just looks so young in this scene". - this is the best illustration of Sam's puppy eyes))
Thank you for posting about the deleted scene with Gunther. It's really very interesting. I didn't know about it before. Thanks for the review
