Things I Love About Season 1: Skin (Part 1)

Jul 25, 2021 15:23

Supernatural, Season 1
Episode 6, “Skin”
Written by John Shiban
Directed by Robert Duncan McNeill.

WARNING: This is a very dark and confronting episode. It contains images of sexualized violence and deals with overt themes of misogyny and violence against women.
My review does the same.

Very interesting, as always!
Love the comparisons to other seasons!
And yes, when I first watched the episode, I had no idea it was Dean at the beginning. I remember being so shocked!

Fascinating (and deep) analysis.

What hooked me on Supernatural was the underlying psychology to the boys that made pretty consistent sense.

Absolutely. The early writers really knew their stuff. Every episode built and developed the boys' characters completely convincingly.

Thanks for reading and commenting :)

Interesting - both the analysis, and that I still want to read it after all this time and so many viewings! You'd have thought we'd have got bored with it by now, but here we are...! 😁👍

Good point about John Shiban's writing - we lost so many great writers along the way, sadly.

Indeed. And here I am, still unpacking these episodes after all this time.

At least in Shiban's place we got Ben Edlund, but he was the last of the greats. Once Edlund left, we were left with the also-rans :(

God bless Kripke and his fascination with dark, twisted sexualization O.O. It’s disturbingly delightful ( ... )

It's just the first season where the streaming services didn't get the right music. Some sort of copyright problem, I believe, but I don't know the details. From season 2 onwards, I believe the music is the same as the original.

Yes, the opening scene is marvelous, and I haven't finished talking about it. The most telling and disturbing image is yet to come.

I think what we see in Sam as the seasons progress is a dramatization, in Jungian terms, of the primary consciousness being overwhelmed by the shadow

A lot happens in episode 6 that we've been waiting for, consciously or otherwise! :D

Thanks so much for reading and commenting. I really appreciate it.

Btw, just a heads up: I've posted part 2 or this rewatch now :)
