July 11, 2019: Me and El at the Penn Museum

El is my great-niece, Gisela, which her family pronounces the German way, Ghee-sah-la. Perhaps if they had given it the French pronounciation, Jeez-a-lah, she might not have shortened it. First she was (understandably) Ella; now she's El which, in Philadelphia, New York, and Chicago is a type of mass transit. She is a loving, awkward 23-year-old ( Read more... )

I think some of the blush may be off my rose.
Perhaps all will be off if she reads your description of her:
She is a loving, awkward 23-year-old...

Why gratuitously include awkward?
Nothing you wrote about her = awkward.

Your last post had a happy, smiling photo of John and Pam.

Where was the goofy?

Good to see you here! Have I just missed your posts or haven't you been around much? I hope you haven't had problems of some sort.

No one in my family, including Ella, is on LJ, so I can be candid in my comments. And Ella is awkward. For instance, I have to be wary of her greeting when we get together. She tends to rush at me to hug me; I'm afraid I'll end up on the floor. She also speaks quite loudly which, in public places, tends to result in over-sharing.

I guess goofy is in the eye of the beholder. Both John and Pam and Sam and Yvonne stated that they were going to act goofy before the pictures were taken. I won't tell them they failed. FanSee

By that time I had realized that Ella had a way of touring a museum I had never encountered before: speed-viewing. Almost without exception, she doesn't read any of the posted explanations. Once in a while she may play with an interactive exhibit. We were a very poor fit for a pair of museum goers, since I am too thorough.

These kids today! D'you know, I'm only 37 and I have the same problem with some of the under-25s I know. They'll give things a microsecond skim if anything. Is it something in the water?

It was wise of you to split the party and accommodate your different styles. :) And it sounds like you both had a very nice time. I don't think you're at any risk of losing her dotage.

Huh! I had no idea. It's somewhat reassuring to know that skimming museums is a thing rather than an aberration of Ella's.

I think that calling my cell phone an artifact took some of sting out of my bailing on the second floor. FanSee

Artifacts - LOL

You've inspired me to use some upcoming time off to visit some places that I've wanted to do lately.

I need more twenty-something nieces and nephews to visit me and get me to stir my stumps and take advantage of the culture in a big city. FanSee

Awww, I'm sure El had a wonderful day. It's not what you do (or what you eat, heee) or even what the conversation was, it's just being with family. You look great in the photo, too. Love that top.

I LOVE that top. It covers a multitude of sins, goes with everything, can be washed out in a sink, and cannot be wrinkled. It has no tag in it, and when I called tthe store, no one remembered it. I'd like to have two more like it, in different colors. FanSee
