From our point of view, Charlotte's evacuation from France at Dunkirk was the dramatic climax to her escape from Hitler's advance through Europe. From her point of view, Dunkirk was only one hurdle she had to scale on her way to a secure life. It was not even the most difficult to overcome ( Read more... )

So awful that after all she went through to get to Britain she ended up in a prison like that :( I'm glad the story has a happy ending though!

When Charlotte told me her story and she got to her arrival in England, she said, "And they locked me up! Years later, she still couldn't believe it. FanSee

What a compelling conclusion to a fascinating life story of an amazing women.
Once again I have to admit I found so many similarities between Charlotte's story and the stories I heard from my own family members of their own trails and tribulations during and after the war.
Thank you so much for sharing.
Take care

OMG, you got me there with the gemutliche dearest Fansee *snif* I LOOOVE this word. My grandmother on my mother's side (who was born in Berlin) used this endearing word ever so frequently and it had been used a lot by my mom who did everything she could to have a gemutliche life even with just homely little things, which are of course the ones you miss the most *sigh*

Ah, those women from Berlin! Living a gemutliche life is definitely a goal. In fact, my darling mother-in-law was one of the few Berliners I knew...and I knew many...who was decidedly un-gemutliche. That made my father-in-law a little crazy, but she made up for it by cooking like an angel. Vadi definitely appreciated the unending stream of delectable meals she put on the table. FanSee

Charlotte certainly had an interesting life! Though I imagine she didn't think it was all that interesting at the time, considering what happened. How awful to have fled for your life, and then to end up in prison for it. Did she and Hans stay together, or did he stay with the French lady?

Good catch. I'm going to edit the post because...yes, he stayed with his French lady. In fact, he lived with her until he died, from complications of diabetes, in the mid-60s. She was his last companion. FanSee
