In 2016, in addition to my usual challenges (read 50 books, see 25 or more movies each year), I added two more, starting with this one which I completed:

Congrats on finishing the 'a book' challenge. I loved doing it and am going to do so again in 2017.

Which one book would you recommend?
What's you think of Saturn Run?
Would you rec #18. City of Fortune?

And so, how many books were on your TBR pile starting on January 1??

Which one book would you recommend?

The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison. I was definitely intimidated by Morrison and had put off reading anything of hers for years. Now I'm intimidated for another reason: The Bluest Eye was her first book, and it was so damn good.

What's you think of Saturn Run?

Saturn Run was hard science fiction with a basis in current science for all but one of the advances that made this story possible. The writing was a bit light on character development and heavy on the engineering, but there was enough character development that I thoroughly enjoyed it. Sandfort/Ctein get extra credit for making many of their science nerds female.

Would you rec #18. City of Fortune?City of Fortune disappointed me; it's why #20. Venice, is also on the list. Before going to Venice in September, I wanted to familiarize myself with its history. CoF only covered 1000 C.E. to 1500, the years of its dominance. I knew that going in, but I thought that would be enough. It wasn't. #20, on the other hand, covered the city from its ( ... )

I've put The Bluest Eyes in my to-be-read file. Thank you.

I enjoyed Saturn Run. I do believe it was you I got the rec from :)

I find I'm liking history books where one particular thing, such as in Longitude or A Bottle of Rum_a history of the world in 10 cocktails, changes everything that comes after. I had thought that maybe city of fortune was that sort of book. Alas, no :)

It wasn't my best year for reading, but the list does include some interesting books and a couple of challenging ones. Now I'm starting over with a clean slate. FanSee

I also challenged myself to read at least 12 books from my TBR pile. We can count this one as doomed to failure from the beginning. If you want to know if you disposed of 12 books from your TBR pile, with the idea of reducing the pile, you better know how many you have on January 1. I plan to repeat this challenge in 2017, the right way.

I have a list of the books I own, so I knew how far the pile went down. What with new acquisitions, not much. *g*

And you've already seen two movies for your 2017 challenge? I think you're going to make it. :-)

I just counted my unread books as of 1/1/17: sixteen physical books, plus seven e-books. Twelve books would make a decent dent.

My movie challenge is on a fiscal year. 2017 started on 1 July 2016 and runs until 30 June 2017. With almost six months left to add to my Movies Seen column, I think I have shot at hitting 30 this time. Fingers crossed. FanSee

It is so rewarding to complete a challenge you make for yourself. Congrats on your accomplishment. I found your 2017 movie challenge intriguing. I've seen 'Central Intelligence' and 'Bad Moms'. I loved them both and gave them 4 star ratings on Netflix. I have 'Hell or High Water' sitting in my DVD player right now waiting for this evening to watch with Amy. 'Suicide Squad' is the one I want most to see next from your list. So many films and stories... so little time. Huge hugs, Grammy

Oh, Gawd, yes!

Did you enjoy "Hell or High Water?" I saw it got a nomination for Best Picture. I loved the setting which reminded me of the area around Lawton, Oklahoma where I lived in 1954.

"Suicide Squad" was fun, too, wasn't it? FanSee

Haven't gotten to 'Suicide Squad' yet. We spent this weekend watching 'Sully' and 'The Secret Life of Pets'. We loved both of them tremendously. I just received 'Jason Bourne' and 'Inferno' for this coming weekend. Like I said... So many films, so little time. LOL!

We both really enjoyed 'Hell or High Water'. It felt very familiar to me too. I've lived a part of my life in areas of the country that this film reminded me of, and the attitude of the characters was very familiar to me as I lived for 48 years in and around the Dallas area, including some very small towns. Besides that, the acting was extremely good and a unique take on the bank robbery theme. Personally I loved the concept of paying off the bank loan with their own money. Does that make me a bad person? LOL! Hugs, Grammy
