September 2016: Burano, Torcello, and Murano

Oct 19, 2016 13:55

On Wednesday, 21 September, our included activity was a day-long trip to the nearby islands of Burano, Torcello, and Murano. That meant that we boarded our boat at around 9:00 a.m. and from that point on, we had few decisions to make and those were how best to enjoy ourselves. Burano, home to a colorful fishing village was our first stop, but first ( Read more... )

Another great day. I loved the depiction of the Last Judgement and the Harrrowing of Hell. It's absolutely gorgeous. And the bridge was oddly lovely without a railing, though, like you, I'd prefer that they have one.

We had a couple of pomegranate bushes (ours hadn't been trimmed up into trees,) in Phoenix. I've always loved them, so that was quite the treat.

I wish I'd come prepared with a top to bottom explanation of the Last Judgement mosaic. There was a whole lot going on there which I barely understood.

When I got home, pomegranates were for sale at my supermarket; they weren't before I left. Now I know how they grow, something I had never wondered about. Travel IS educational. FanSee

IDK how I could have missed thos delightful update dear Fans but I'm so pleased I didn't :)
Looks like all had a beautiful day. I remember those murano glass hard candy. Also when I was in Venice back in late 1990's I bought a beautiful blue glass bead necklace and a tiny star of David pendent which was made with the same technique as your pendent. AFAIR I also bought the same sort of chain. I bought mine in Venice though not on the Island of Murano. The little shop was hidden away in an alley just off the Piaza San Marco btw.
Yours is really beautiful. Wear it well my friend.
Thanks again for sharing.

Oh and pomegranates definitely grow on trees. We have them here in abundance in September and early October and it's mainly used in New Years holiday dinner. I love this majestic fruit and it's beautiful taste. I put in green salad mostly.

I love buying jewelry for a souvenir. First of all, you can always find room for it in your suitcase. Then, when you get home, you remember your trip every time you wear it. What could be better?

I put pomegranate seeds in my green salads, too. Adds a nice pop to the salad just as the usual additions are getting past their prime. FanSee

Working with produce for so many years, I was aware that pomegranates grow on trees, but I had never actually seen them. They look so small and lost, lol!
I love the photo of the bridge, although the lack of railings would keep me dead center and focused on my feet!

Thanks for sharing, FanSee.

That bridge was a tad scary, but I got across it with no problems except an accelerated heart beat. Our boat picked us up from the other side of the island, so I only had to cross it once.

I was surprised at how ordinary exotic (to me, anyway) pomegranates looked, growing like oranges or apples on their tree. FanSee

Just wanted to pop in to say that I've been reading all your posts, though I haven't had it in me to comment, and loving taking this trip vicariously through you. :)

Beautiful pics. I came here quickly and am so glad I did. I've been super busy so need to look at your trip in more detail. I have that exact same pic of that bridge and Burano. In 2014 on our trip to Europe I escaped from hubby to do an afternoon tour of those three islands. It was delightful except it rained spasmodically. I loved the glass blowing but didn't buy anything. I like to take my time and everything was expensive. Loved the lace shops in Burano and bought a table runner for me and a hanky for MIL. Loved the church at Torcello. Such a pretty spot.

We had ten days of beautiful weather (out of ten) in Italy. It did rain while I was there but only at night or when Judy and I were in our room with our feet up. That's because I forgot to bring an umbrella, and the weather gods were good to me.

The tour of the three islands was definitely a high point of my Venetian stay. FanSee
