September 2016: The Dunnetteers Walk to the Rialto

Oct 18, 2016 21:53

Tuesday, 20 September: Today's activity was a walking tour of Venice, beginning near the Don Orione and ending at the Rialto. I was disappointed; I wanted very much to see St. Mark's Square and the Doge's Palace. Nothing was stopping me from going wild and crazy and just taking off for there by myself, of course, but I also wanted to see everything ( Read more... )

Aaand the adventures continue *YEAH*
Thanks for yet another fascinating delightful installment dear Fans.
I can totally relate to your inner conflict about attending pre-paid excursions after being out and about all day. Having been on two organized group tours in the past (to the US in 1991 and to Europe in late 1990's) I know how tempting it could be to get as many extra activities as possible- even though some of those activities can get quite touristy- and at the same time venture to few other sites on your own during the group's free time.

As for the Piazza San Marco- IDK why you were not able to get there even just for a brief walk and snapping a few pics during your free time. I mean it IS quite a prominent part of this fascinating city. Oh well... you've had quite an adventure just as well.
Can't wait for more
Thanks for sharing

p.s
The pics from the Gondola are beautiful!! You're a true artist. I wish you could have snapped a pic of the gondolier on his cell phone *g*

As you probably realize by now, we did get to St. Mark's Square and I had multiple opportunities to drink in its atmosphere. Had I read the pamphlet Simon put together for us, I would have known that sooner.

I should have gotten a picture of my cell-phoning gondolier: too funny. I was a bit leary of twisting around in my seat, with David at the rear of the boat, making it feel tipsy. FanSee, aka Big Chicken.

Wow, what a day. I would have been tempted to skip the concert, but Vivaldi, I can listen to him until the cows come home.

Fabulous shots and the gondola ride seemed a hoot. I'm glad you went!

Thanks for having us along on your big day out! :D

So am I. It was uber-touristy but every so often, it's good to just give in and enjoy the experience.

Thanks for reading and commenting although I'm not sure you should encourage me. (Diarrhea of the fingers!) FanSee

You definitely got your money's worth on this day! I have to admit, I've tried to cut back on how much I try to squeeze into one day because we found that we were really tiring ourselves out. But there were still days like this one, where you going from morning to night. Exhausting!

It's frustrating when you run into a place that doesn't allow photography. I guess they want you to buy the guide book. *g*

That's what Judy and I did when we went on our own to Spain. Here, with an organized itinerary, we were tempted to agree to do just one more thing because it was available and easy to do. Similarly, it's easy to forget that you're no longer 50 or even 65 and adjust your schedule accordingly. FanSee

Why did you decide not to visit any synagogues and museums in the Gheto Novissimo?

The '8:00p.m.' concert - after keeping you waiting, at least the musicians didn't call for a sciopero. (strike) Then again, you'd have returned earlier to the Don Orione. :)

A gondolier on his cell phone - a sign of the times.

Beautiful photos.

We just weren't in the mood for another tour at that point, having just been shepherded all over Venice. "Something to go back for," my friend Trudy always said.

Thank you so much for reading and commenting. Much appreciated. FanSee
