Getting Better Every Day in Every Way

Jan 06, 2016 21:51

After I fell and broke my distal radius (the part of the radius at the base of my thumb) my left hand was in first a splint and then a cast for six weeks and four days. When the cast came off, my orthopedist sent me to physical therapy for my hand. I was delighted, but I pointed out to him that the bigger problem was my falling: six falls in the ( Read more... )

I have fallen 4 times in the last year. The last fall fractured my humerus at the distal head, my shoulder was dislocated and my rotator cuff had to be repaired. I am three weeks post-op and finally, my primary care doctor is listening to me. As soon as I am released by the surgeon, I will see a neurologist and my PT for the arm and shoulder will also include a gait analysis. I am so tired of finding myself on the ground and hurt. Thank you for sharing,

If I hadn't asked, my orthopedist would never have offered p.t. for my gait and posture. I really encourage you to be pro-active about asking. The orthopedist did not want me to start the p.t. until he was ready to discharge me or about two months after my fall, but I asked as soon as he mentioned the hand therapy.

Good luck! I'd love to know how you are doing. FanSee

I am! I do my stretches about six days out of seven, and a full set of exercises at least five days a week. Plus I'm working with John almost every Friday, missing only when he is out of town or very busy. I'm just not a gym rat, but doing them at home works for me. And of course I walk almost every day since that's my main mode of transportation. FanSee

Good for you for being so proactive about this! For those of us of a certain age, falling is not a thing you really want to do. I took a slight fall on the ice the other day, thanks to my two dogs, but didn't hurt myself. How easy it can happen, though.

Falling is so scary! We haven't had any ice or snow yet this winter, and that's more than okay with me. I will still be very cautious when we do. FanSee

I have surprised myself by how diligent I've been about doing my exercises. In the past, I haven't been good about committing to exercise routines, but this last episode got my attention, that's for sure! FanSee

That's great that you haven't had a fall since August! Glad you were able to get such useful treatment.

I know! I had one near miss, thought I was going down, but managed to catch myself without even holding on to anything. I really think that without all the work on my balance, I would have. FanSee
