I just got back from Dragon*Con - got woken up this morning by my Precious Little Tax Deductions (ages 7 and 5) who jumped into the bed at 7 am (sleeping in, at Casa Kessler) and hugged me to pieces. Sounds like a hoot. And thanks for the survival advice for introverts. I swear, sometimes I think even my characters are pointing and laughing.

At least you can say your friends are virtual.
I'm still stuck in the "imaginary" stage.

I remember my first time at Dragon Con, back in 2003, I was scared witless. I had gone because some Australian teen actors were gonna be there for the first time ever and I was obsessed witht hem (The Tribe) and...it was an eye opening experience for someone who had never left the tri-state area of NJ/PA/NY. I LOVED every minute of it (including when I ran into James Marsters and fell on his chest) and wish I had the money to do it every year. Its the only place (aside from Otakon) that you will see me openly talk to anyone who says Hello to me.

I also made a right fool of myself in front of Adam Baldwin in 2005--he smiled and winked at me and I wanted to swoon. And in front of Kevin Sorbo? OMG I babbled a mile a minute about how much I have loved Hercules and Andromeda since I was 10 years old. We won't go into what a cake I was in front of Jewel Staite. the words 'I love you and worship you and have done so since I was about eight years old' were prolly said many times.

I will say that I agree with the fangirl thing. I went to my first 'convention' this summer (RWA) and was terrified because I didn't know anyone other than my roomie.

Most of my conversations started out with "Oh my god, you're [ENTER BESTSELLING AUTHOR'S NAME HERE]! I loved your books!"

After that, it's easy to start up a conversation. People love talking about their books and I loved talking to them about them! Nobody gave me the brushoff either, which I was extremely thankful for. :)
