Edits and revising

Friday I received the editorial letter on my third book. As most of you know, an editorial letter is the feedback where your editor starts off by listing the things he/she liked about your book...then tears you a new one over everything that's bad ;) To summarize the five pages of feedback from my editor: Great beginning! Great ending! Middle... ( Read more... )

I need critiques. The more, the better.

Although I'm horribly thin skinned, so I don't always take it well.

Ha, I don't always take it well, either (as my critt partner Melissa can attest). But I figure it's like surgery - painful yet necessary.

Hey Jeaniene-- A topic close to my heart. I have a GREAT critique group and a couple of beta readers, but even with all that, the feedback from my editor never fails to make my manuscripts tighter and my stories better. I have had experience with an publisher who didn't edit--bad idea. I much prefer an objective eye to spot those problem points that I tend to skip right over because you're right, we're all blind to certain tendencies in our writing. I, for one, wouldn't want to forgo the editorial process.

It is amazing the things a good editor can catch, isn't it? Then I have many "duh!" head-smack moments of wondering why I didn't see the problems myself.

Funny thing about crit partners is they can really open your eyes to what a writer does wrong. They can tell you what they liked and didn't like, but they can also shake you up a bit because what you thought was solid writing, is really all over the place.

If I ever finish, I want this MS critted to the point that it's perfect for querying. I will not send out crap!

I am a big fan of good, honest, and thoughtful critiquing. I have a small group of folks who I can trust to look over my stuff and give me some great feedback ( ... )

I'd be extremely wary of writing for a publisher who didn't edit, because I know I am blind to so many flaws in my writing. But yes, I do love those pats on the back, too. They keep me going during the rough times.
