Is it so hard to write good, fae-based fantasy where the protagonist is NOT a pretty, talented girl who gets the Too Good, But Unbelievably In Love, With Her guy

It's really hard for me to want to read any kind of para-rom with fae/goblins/etc. I want the darker, more ruthless side. So far, I keep coming up with pretty-boys. :/

Even The Goblin King by Shona Husk was a massive disappointment.
