I actually think this answer is a bit insulting to Madonna herself. The woman is not dead, or irrelevant. Madonna herself *is* the 21st century Madonna. I would describe Lady Gaga as a performance artist, myself.
I think Madonna is fine, but I think Lady Gaga is a hack of Madonna, both in music and in fashion. I had three words to describe Lady Gaga and that's what I went with.
That's interesting. I think Madonna and Lady Gaga are quite distinct. I can see Madonna's influences on Gaga, but I think the main difference is what they intend for their music to do, and how they present themselves as artists. I see Gaga as the new Andy Warhol. I think of her as an artist first, and a musician second. Madonna was about breaking down mores and taboos around sex, gender, and sexuality and Gaga is about the post-modern performance art.
I was thinking more musically and some of her fashions while performing her music. That does put a different spin on her. I think I'm a bit more cynical. She seems to push the envelope, bigger and bolder, to get more attention and people to go "what is she going to do now?" I like the artistic intent better.
