So...What's with the Snakes?

As is often for me, I was researching (for this character: pissed_idiot) when I stumbled over some interesting information that made me drop out of my chair, or would have if I had been in a chair and not in the bath. According to Doctor Who: The Legend Continues, at certain points of the show in Pertwee's tenure, a snake tattoo on his right forearm is clearly ( Read more... )

Yep, Pertwee had a tattoo on his arm- evident in a scene where he's drying off after washing up. At the time, I think the BBC really didn't care too much about the tattoo (as there was little they could do about hiding it) and AFAIK, the tattoo hasn't come up in any canon. It's just something the actor happened to have. :) (Sorta like seeing Orlando Bloom's LotR tattoo on his forearm in some of the PotC scenes)

They did try to explain it, though.

What I found from a fan somewhere (can't find the link now):

There are two contradictory explanations. In the Virgin era received wisdom was that the Tattoo was somthing to do with the Cult of Rassilon the Vampire (I think it was excised from a final Cornell draft, but I could be wrong), and in the BBC Books era it was stated by Lawrence Miles to be the same as the convict mark used in Shada, the Time Lords' prison planet, and was a symbol that the Doctor was a criminal in exile.

*giggle* I'd love to see it, please!

Crackiest how? *L* I caught that: he's just a character in somebody's magazine. But still. *L* The name, the name! *flails* What's even closer to that is Jack Hawksmoor. He killed a lady named Rose Tattoo, after she had killed a guy called the Doctor.

And those characters are created by Warren Ellis, the creator of Pete Wisdom, who has his own series being written by none other than Paul Cornell!! That's the biggest WTF ever.

Hey Jen! This has nothing to do with your post unfortunatly but this is the poster formally known as 32_flavorz. I had to change my journal sadly, and this is my new one. If it's alright with you, can I add you back?

The tattoo on Pertwee's arm is most obvious in "Doctor Who and the Silurians," as Pertwee works on repairing the nuclear reactor. The tattoo on Tegan's arm isn't really a tattoo but an incarnation of the Mara, the evil entity that possesses her. The snake is first seen in the episode "Kinda." The story in which Jamie refers to the piper is "The Moonbase," which, sadly, was partially deleted by the BBC. What Jamie actually sees is a Cyberman.
