He knows his time is near. The gore of the war is consuming many of his friends. Most are forced to follow the Death Eaters because they are afraid of what they will lose if they don't. Blaise mysteriously disappears before the war. Pansy shows her disgust about the entire thing, but that is all scripted. If she had it her way she would fight alongside the Order of the Phoenix. She can't risk it because her family is on the line. Theodore has to hex friends he has made from other houses. He doesn't enjoy this, even though he pretends to. The stories are similar among Slytherins. Most people in the Wizarding World fail to realize this because they are quick to judge those who aren't given options.
Death is not an option.
Draco knows his mistakes. To the world he portrays himself as this calm, at times aloof individual that is above Wizarding laws. He feels he can't be touched by anything. Not even the man he fears most, Lord Voldemort. He knows this is all a sham. As he watches Hermione be tortured, the intimate moments they shared together flash through his mind. He wants to yell out, but his fear doesn't let him. He isn't as strong as he appears to the world; inside he is frail.
Hermione shrieks. It's as though death grips her by the throat.
He wants to walk away but he can't. He's forced to watch the woman he loves go through the most horrible pain she has ever experienced. To make things worse, she is pregnant. She tells him the news some time before taking off with Harry and Ron. She willfully doesn't listen to his pleas that she hide herself from the world. Hermione, having the Gryffindor spark that she does, is unwilling to do this. She can't hide while her friends fight. By the time the war ends many have lost their lives in the process; new lives are born. People who have long been in hiding finally return to the outside world and rejoice their return. A return to peace, tranquility and security. Evil doesn't rest for long, but this war had been won.
Draco knows the gray eyes of his son will soon see the world. He isn't sure whether or not he wants to be there for that.
