There was nothing she wanted more than her career. There were moments in Alicia's life where she believed that starting a family was one of the most important things she wanted to accomplish. Then Angelina got pregnant. It was difficult and trying on her relationship causing it to almost end on various occasions. Alicia didn't want things to go like that for her and Miles. She wanted to talk to him about it, but it scared her. She didn't know how he would take it. She thought he would dismiss her feelings, which had happened on previous times about different things. She didn't want to face anything that could potential make things go badly for her.
So she poured her energy into excelling at work. She wanted it badly. She let her drive rev up her determination. It became obvious to anyone who was paying attention that she had a hunger that was insatiable. It didn't take long to get her first promotion and when she wanted to go out to celebrate, Miles had other plans. She tried to work around his schedule, but he was being difficult about it. It was obvious to her that he was getting in the way of her success so she would have to dismiss him before it continued to erode. Yes, she knew this was the very thing she feared, but she figured if she did it would hurt less. Maybe it wouldn't be as bad if she was ending it. The hard part was being honest and gentle at the same time.
"Can we talk?"
"Sure, but make it quick because I have a meeting in half an hour."
"We're over."
"What?"
"Yes, you heard correctly. We're over. You don't have to worry about having to make time for me anymore. You can focus all your time on work and I can do the same. It's obvious our priorities are elsewhere and that our relationship isn't working for either of us anymore."
"Are you serious?"
"Yes, I am. Have a good day."
Miles was speechless. He knew he was busy but he didn't realize he had been neglecting the relationship that badly. She looked at Alicia sadly as she walked away and made it a point to go back to the jeweler to return the ring. There was no point in proposing to a girl he wasn't dating anymore, a girl who didn't believe it was working out between them. He felt foolish for putting in all this overtime only to have it end this way.
