Growing up Alicia was told to look out for people trying to take advantage of her in school, to be careful of the liars and the cheaters who would try to make her life miserable and most importantly to be cautious when talking to strangers - don't say too much or give the wrong people an invitation into your life. These warnings made her vigilant and more aware of her surroundings, but it didn't stop her from getting her heart broken by Miles Bletchley on more than one occasion.
The first time Miles broke her heart was when he denied they were dating. The second time he broke her heart was when he stood her up on one of the most important events in her life - she was being recognized for her outstanding work for the Ministry of Magic by strengthening their international relationship with Russia. By the third time she was kicking him to the curb and telling him she didn't want to see him again.
The thing about vigilance is that it doesn't always prevent every single thing from happening. You can't foresee everything. You can't stop certain life lessons from occurring. All you can do is learn from the past, live in the present and apply the lesson in the future. Alicia learned this, but the realizations took a long time to settle in.
