Everything was going well in Alicia's life. Well...almost everything. She had a steady job that she loved. Her health was at its best and she continued to exercise to have it remain that way. She had many romantic prospects on the horizon, but she wasn't really following through on any of them. It was hard to peak her interest. So when Angelina and Katie suggested they go out for drinks, she reluctantly agreed.
"Maybe you'll meet someone interesting," Angelina commented as they enjoyed their firewhiskeys.
"I know interesting guys, but some aren't stable, others aren't what I had in mind looks wise and still others aren't ambitious enough for me. I know, I know that I'm being picky," Alicia replied.
"You've always been that way. It doesn't surprise us," Katie retorted.
They all laughed. This was one of their typical conversations. After finishing their drinks, they headed to the dance floor to enjoy the song that just came on. As they swiveled their hips and shimmied their shoulders a handsome stranger approached them. He whispered something into Angelina's ear and she danced with him. Then another young man followed suit, but he was nerdier than the last one. Still handsome, but he had an intellectual look about him. He cozied up to Katie, who was all for it. She giggled and flirted like it was her job, which left Alicia all alone. She got off the dance floor, not liking this turn of events and headed back to the bar. When it looked like this was shaping up to be yet another example of how much her life sucked, another guy approached her. Alicia was surprised to realize he looked familiar.
"Now that your friends are distracted I can talk to you," were Miles' first words.
"You arranged that?"
"Something like that."
"Why? We've talked before. It didn't seem to be going anywhere."
"I think if you give me a chance you'll see that I'm stable and have all the qualities you need."
They spent the next three hours discussing a range of topics. Alicia didn't remember the last time she had such an in-depth conversation. She agreed to see him again.
