Miles didn't want to give up his habit of lying, but he knew that if he tried hard enough he could curve it. Maybe that would make a difference. He didn't know for sure, but was willing to try. He waited for Alicia outside her office and when she came out, he heard an audible sigh escape her lips.

"How was your day?" he asked her politely. He wanted to start things out on the right foot.

"Decent. What do you want now? Haven't I made it clear I don't want to go on a date with you? We went on one date. It went okay, but that's as far as things are going to go between us."

"Yes, you made it clear. I just wanted you to know that I think the reason you're not giving me more chances is because of all the mistakes I've made. I wanted to apologize for my part in our misunderstandings. I want to let you know that I'm going to try to improve myself. I'm going to stop trying to win you over and instead make myself a decent person. I know it won't make a difference with you but at least I know that I matter enough to work on myself. I have enough self-esteem to not be bothered by your constant rejection."

Before Alicia could retort, Miles walked away. He smirked because he saw the stunned look on Alicia's face. She wasn't expecting this sudden change. She valued her independence and autonomy. It never occurred to her that Miles might value the same things within himself and that somehow she eroding them by her sharing her low opinions of him as often as she could. It really made her rethink the way she interacted with Miles, which is what he was trying to do. If she could doubt this then maybe she would question other choices.
