Alicia remembered the day she saw Miles after they both left Hogwarts. She didn't expect him to look so mature, so rugged and so dashing. The day was a day like any other. It was a warm, sunny day in June and showers were expected in the evening but she loved the rain. It smelled nice and refreshed the air. That evening she was going on a date with Adrian Pucey and he wanted to set Miles up with a friend of Alicia's. She brought Angelina along, but it was obvious that Miles and Angelina weren't clicking. They laughed and shared some jokes, but the spark wasn't there. When Alicia excused herself to the bathroom Angelina tagged along.
"You're not really hitting it off with him," Alicia commented.
"No, not really. He's nice and all, but utterly boring. You, on the other hand, seem to be smitten with your date. I would be careful if I were you. Adrian is known as a ladies' man for a reason."
"I know. I feel weird going on this date with him knowing that Katie slept with him. I know she said it didn't mean anything, but I have a feeling she's lying. You know how she gets when she lies."
"She chews on her hair."
Alicia nodded. "She avoids eye contact and changes the subject," she added.
The date ended with the young women parting ways with the young men. Alicia made no attempt at seeing Adrian again because she knew Katie had a thing for him. It was apparent when she asked a million questions about Alicia's date with him. Angelina and Miles had already discussed the fact they weren't connecting, which didn't leave either of them surprised when they stopped talking afterwards.
A few days later Miles and Alicia bumped into each other at a cafe near the Ministry.
"How's it going?" Miles asked.
"Good, good. You?"
"Great, listen I know it's none of my business but I've been meaning to ask - why haven't you followed up with Adrian? He's not used to women not fawning over him after their first date and I'm actually getting tired of hearing him whine. It's rather annoying," Miles confessed. He knew it wasn't the best thing to do, but he needed to vent and since Marcus wasn't around, he figured Alicia would listen.
"Don't tell him this, but my friend is interested in him and I'm not. So I figured I'd clear the way for her."
Miles nodded. "Makes sense. He thinks you're pretty. He tends to go after the pretty ones, but I kept insisting you're not pretty. He won't listen to me though."
Alicia made a face. "I have to go. It was nice talking to you," she said, trying to excuse herself. She wasn't going to stand around and let Miles insult her. If he thought she was ugly that was his problem, not hers. She didn't have to prove anything to anyone. Who did he think he was?
As she started to walk away, Miles called out and said, "No, I think you misunderstood me. You're not pretty. You're beautiful. He doesn't understand that women like you need to be wooed genuinely, not with false flattery and pretenses. I apologize if you thought I was insinuating something else."
Alicia blushed. She felt extremely foolish that she jumped to conclusions. "Apology accepted. Well, my lunch is almost over. I have to get back to work."
"How about we have coffee sometime?"
"Sure, sounds like fun," she replied. She couldn't herself from grinning widely as she left the cafe.
