It was hard for him to fathom how she could continue to smile in such dismal times. Yea, they were dead and were playing a stupid sadistic game for their lives, and yea, she had no recollection of Beat being her brother at all, but through it all she still smiled. Neku found it hard to believe that she could continue to be so optimistic and yet blunt in her own way. Didn’t she ever feel any other emotion, any other feeling that didn’t involve smiling? It just bothered him how someone could be so willing to still smile despite the odds.
So when he had asked her the question out of the blue, she had just smiled at him before turning off to run after Beat who was farther up the scramble crossing leaving him confused and yet feeling as if maybe his question had been answered. As Neku watched Beat call for Rhyme to hurry, the thought dawned on him:
Maybe even in the darkest times she smiled because it meant giving someone - anyone a little glimmer of hope. It made people believe that everything would be okay.
And that thought alone made Neku smile just a little bit too.
