The first place Yanagi Renji went when he entered a large sporting goods store was to the tennis equipment. He had always done this, and when he was a young child, his father had bought him a rather cheap racket, assuming that wanting to play tennis was just going to be a passing fancy for his son.
Renji had proved his father wrong. After taking lessons and joining a tennis school (where he had met his best friend and doubles partner Inui Sadaharu), it was more than obvious it had become a passion that was a part of him.
After they had moved to the Kanagawa prefecture, his father had promised that he would buy Renji a new racket, since they were sending Renji to a school that was known for their excellence in tennis. The only mistake in this was the fact that between his first and second year Renji had a rather incredible growth sprut, outgrowing the racket he had previously.
Renji stared at the rackets before him. There were several brands to chose from - Prince, Babolat, Wilson, Yonex. Only...none of them seemed to appeal to him. Renji frowned as he tested several different rackets, but none of them met to his satisfaction. Renji frowned at the display.
A salesperson came up to him. "Are you in need of assistance?" They asked him. Renji turned to the girl that had approached him.
"Is this your only selection?" He asked, set to be disappointed.
"On display, yes." Renji frowned. "We can special order something if you'd like though." She offered.
The downside to that would be he would be stuck with a raket he may or may not like. Renji considered this. He stood there for a moment, and then shook his head. "Thank you, but I think I'll look else where." He said, turning and leaving.
The next store he went into had a larger selection, and most of them were at least of better quality. Then Renji saw this one that looked a little out of place, but seemed well balanced for his play style. He gave it a few swings, finding it practically perfect for him. Renji cringed a little at the price though. It was over 15,000 yen. That was more than his allowance for three months.
It was a perfect fit though, and he could live without books for a few months - after all, there were libraries he could borrow them from. The shopkeeper had noticed Renji staring at the racket, considering. "You look like someone who appreciates classics." He said. "The V1 Classic has been manufactured for quite some years, but the only changes made to it are cosmetic." He informed Renji. "It's a good balanced racket."
Renji looked at him. "You play?" He asked. The shopkeeper nodded.
I've used that racket myself. Like I said, it's a good balanced one, but it's not one I prefer personally. You look like the type of player that it would fit with though."
Renji considered that for a few moments. Spend 15,500 some yen on a new racket, or consider something else. Luckily, Renji had been saving up for this new racket for quite a while as he knew his parents would no longer be buying them for him. "I'll take it."
