The starlight shone brightly from the shore of the beach. Wet sand settled between the toes of the two walking across the patch.
"It's cold out here." The girl complained.
"Sorry." Her companion murmured.
"It's the middle of winter, Renji. A nice long walk along the beach would be fine in spring or summer..."
Yanagi Renji had a slight smile on his face as he pulled his girlfriend closer to him. He had expected the complaints. Renji took his coat off and wrapped it around her shoulders. "Is that better?"
"Thank you." She said quietly, smiling. "So, why are we out here?"
Renji looked up at the sky, his arm around her. "Mizu...I..." Renji started then paused to clear his throat. "I know it's cold, I know it's the middle of winter. You know what tonight is though, right?"
Mizu tilted her head up at him. "It's New Year's Eve." She said, wondering what that had to do with anything.
Renji checked his watch. It was the middle of the night, and this wasn't something he had planned on yet, but it seemed like as good as time as any.
Renji tilted his head down so their foreheads met. "I know you've known this was coming, but..." Renji smiled a bit more. Mizu laughed, a little, definitely knowing what was going to happen. It made being out in the cold sea breeze a bit better.
"Renji..." She said, not entirely sure what to do to make him less nervous. Then again, this was probably one of the most important questions of his life.
"I don't feel so strange asking now, since you'll graduate this year. I know it's been on my mind since we met. Well, a while after Seiichi set us up." Renji laughed a little. "I never thought anyone would mean as much to me as you do...." Renji was glad for the mist from the sea stinging across his face. He ran his fingers through Mizu's long hair, brushing it back from her ears. Leaning down so only Mizu and sea could hear him he whispered into her ear. "Will you marry me?" He finally asked. "I know I don't have a ring or anything right now, but..."
Mizu leaned closer to him, hugging Renji tightly, burying her face into his chest. "It doesn't matter right now." She said, smiling even though he couldn't see it. She finally leaned up and kissed him. "Of course I will." She said. "But only if we can go indoors and get warm." She said, grinning. Renji laughed.
"I think you know me too well." He said.
Mizu grinned back. "I know you well enough that I'm at least ninety-eight percent certain that you brought me out here just so we'd have a reason to cuddle." She said.
"Your math is wrong." Renji said, wrapping his arm around her waist, and guiding her home. "The percentage was one hundred." He said.
Mizu elbowed him in the ribs. "Cruel." She said, but was so happy that it didn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. "Think this means that we'll get a bit of reprieve from your parents now that we're actually officially engaged?" She asked.
Renji just smiled. "They never really minded. I could see Mother's point though. Temptation is some times hard to resist."
Mizu smiled as well. "I know." She said quietly. "They were quite trusting, weren't they?"
Renji stared up at the sky again, thinking. His parents had been rather trusting of the two of them. "I think after all you've been through....I think I understand why they allowed it."
Mizu looked down at the ground. Renji squeezed her hand.
"It's alright." He said, pausing to look her in the eye. "I love you. That's what matters now." He said, hugging her close again. She just nodded. "Let's go home." He said, turning them back into the city. "Oh..." Renji glanced down at his watch. It was three minutes until midnight.
"What?" Mizu asked, wondering why they had stopped.
Renji kept a close eye on his watch for the next couple of minutes. When the dial read midnight, he leaned down and gave Mizu a deep kiss. Once they broke the kiss, Renji laughed. "I always wanted to do that." He said, giving her another small kiss on the forehead. "Happy new year, my dear."
Mizu shook her head and giggled. "If that's how every year is going to start, I might be able to get used to that."
Renji smiled. "Alright, I owe you some hot tea and some body heat."
Mizu smiled. "The tea can wait. The body heat is going to be well appreciated though." She said, yawning. "All I want to do is get home, crawl into bed, cuddle up to you and go to sleep."
"Like we have for almost the past year?"
Mizu nodded. "Exactly." She said. "And hopefully for the rest of our lives."
