The road leading away from the selection camp was lined with several trees, their leaved branches letting only a few dapples of sunlight through. Two lone figures walked side by side down the road in silence. Honestly the two didn't need words to know what the other was thinking.

It didn't mean that it didn't still wasn't quite making sense in the other's head.

"Did you-" They both started at the same time. They paused for a moment, then laughed together.

"Go ahead, Sadaharu." Renji said.

"Did you do it for Kirihara or..." 'Or me' was the unspoken thought.

Renji didn't answer and kept looking straight ahead. "Did you really miscalculate your ingredients in the juice?" He returned.

Fifteen-all, it seemed.

"I didn't know it was going to have a laxative effect." Inui muttered quietly, knowing Renji would hear him anyway. Or least have a very good idea of what he said.

Renji bit his lip, trying not to laugh. "You could have defeated Mizuki."

"You were about to defeat Kirihara." Inui pointed out.

"Akaya needs challengers just as strong - or even stronger - than Seiichi, Genichirou and myself." Renji said. The score was still even. Renji tilted his head to the side, and looked at Inui with his eyes slightly open. "What about Kaidou?"

Inui looked confused. "What about him?" He asked.

"He was your doubles partner this year and was eliminated before you were to play. Was he the other reason you resigned?"

Inui almost tripped over his own feet at the thought of that. "Renji, do you really think I'd do something like that?"

Renji smirked. Game, set and match. "Do you think I would have?"

Inui took a deep breath before adjusting his glasses and continuing on down the road.

"We as the seniors have a duty to our kouhai to encourage them to do better and aim beyond their limits, Sadaharu. At least that's how I see it. I can't say I agree with Atobe or Tezuka's method though." Renji stopped for a moment. "Seiichi will probably be having words with me when he returns."

Inui stopped a few steps ahead of Renji, then turned back to face him. "You have your own way of encouraging people to be stronger." Inui laughed a little. "Unfortunately, your methods only seem to make sense to you."

"Sadaharu..." Renji sighed. "They make perfect sense if you think about it."

Inui stared at his old friend for a while, then turned and started walking again. Renji jogged to catch up with him, grabbing Inui's wrist when he did.

"Have we ever really needed words to know what the other is thinking?"

Inui laughed. "No, we haven't."

"Then you know all the answers already." Renji said, leaning closer to Inui until their faces were only centimeters apart. "You already know." He repeated, just barely above a whisper and closed the distance between their lips.

When the kiss broke, both boys had similar smirks on their faces. "Just as I thought." They said in unison, laughing.

"I mean it this time. Let's go home, Sadaharu." Renji said, not letting go of Inui's hand.
