Her words haunted him. Aren’t you as much to blame as I?
Was he? Now that weeks had passed, he was beginning to doubt his actions. Had her infidelity been enough to warrant dragging her on this trip? Perhaps he should have forced her into a divorce.
She’d rather be married to that scoundrel Charles, he thought. And then a child was rushed into the infirmary, and he had no more time to waste on regrets.

Maybe she needed to get a hobby.
As she ate in silence, fuming, a tiny voice in the back of her mind said, You brought this upon yourself.
For now, she ignored it.

“Hmm?” Walter looked up, his eyes unfocused from concentrating. Then he said, “I expect so. Is that what you’d like?”
She smiled. “Yes, it is.”
He stood and pushed the chair in. “Then I shall do my best to find one. I’d do anything to make you happy here, you know that.” As he passed her, he dropped a kiss on her cheek.
Kitty watched him go. He really wants to make me happy.
She thought about Charlie and felt the first seed of guilt begin to spread. As long as Walter didn’t find out….
